Impact Stories Breaking Barriers – Gak’s Journey to Meaningful Employment Gak Thuc knows how tough it can be when every job feels just out of reach, making the future seem uncertain. Before joining Youth Projects' Transition to Work program, he struggled with confidence, lacked essential work credentials, and found it difficult to secure a stable job. “I didn’t have the right work experience, and I didn’t know how to start,” Gak explained. “Youth Projects helped me work through my challenges step by step.” Transition to Work took a holistic approach, offering Gak support that went beyond employment. From mental health services and self-confidence coaching to providing a Myki card and helping him obtain his forklift license, the program met him exactly where he was at and helped to provide him with the essential skills that would grow his employment options. We understand that every young person’s journey is unique, which is why their approach is personalised. Gak worked closely with Gasha Admassu (Youth Coach at Youth Projects Melton Hub), who helped him to map out a career plan, improve his resume, and develop the skills needed for long-term success. The team also ensured that he had access to the essential tools and resources required for his new job, including work clothing, transportation assistance and even some driving lessons. Through the program, Gak was employed to work at Recycle4Change, an organisation that aligned with his values and provided an opportunity that was exactly right for him. With the drivers license under his belt, Gak was able to then apply for his forklift license through his new employer which further broadens his future employability potential. “Once I got my forklift license, I felt more confident. Having a job that fits my skills made a big difference in my life.” Even after securing employment, Gak continued to receive ongoing in-work support from Youth Projects, ensuring a smooth transition into his new role. Whether it was adjusting to workplace expectations, managing schedules, or continuing personal development, the Youth Projects team remained by his side. Gak’s story is one of many, proving that with the right support, overcoming employment barriers is possible.
