The current job climate is a bit rocky right across Australia right now, but we are here to guide you through this shaky period. Our teams of youth coaches are here to support you through your job journey. Together, we can get through this. We’ve put together some helpful tips to get you through.

1. Use social media as your self-marketing bestie

Use Facebook and other platforms to post about looking for work and see what might be available through your networks or even local community pages.  You never know who might see the post! Maybe even make your resume go social by creating a LinkedIn profile – this a great starting point for future career opportunities.

2. Socials health check

  • Are your pages safe-for-work or appropriate?
  • What can a potential employer see if they found you online?
  • Do you need to make any changes before going out?

3. Build on your soft skills

The new reality is that there may not be as many jobs currently available as there was before, so let’s get thinking of ways to stand out from the crowd. Soft skills are equally as important as technical skills for many jobs, so spend some time on building these skills.

Use goal setting plans and do things to improve on one skill each week. This could be something like improving ‘initiative’ – maybe think of ways to help around the house without being asked. Be creative with your techniques!

4. Job quizzes and personality tests

If you are unsure of what to do next, a brilliant way to find out more about yourself is taking some quizzes or personality tests. This is a good opportunity to think critically about your results and explore potential jobs or career pathways that compliment your strengths.

Here’s a couple we suggest:

5. Focus on maintaining good mental health

  • Go for walks regularly
  • Avoid staying too up to late
  • Limit your social media use
  • Practice a new hobby (cooking, baking, gardening, wood work, etc.)
  • Yoga and meditation/mindfulness – journaling, gratitude journal
  • Stay connected to friends over phone/FaceTime or houseparty

We’ve got loads of tips and tools to help with this.

6. Research, research, research!

Explore the different industries that are calling out for new recruits right now – there’s a whole host of exciting opportunities waiting for you to jump on!
