What is it?

Mobile Syringe Exchange encompasses three needle syringe programs (NSPs) operated by Youth Projects in Melbourne's north and west including the Inner West Outreach Service (IWOS), North West Outreach Service (NWOS) and the Glenroy fixed site exchange.

Mobile Syringe Exchange prevents the transmission of blood borne viruses through the provision of clean injecting equipment, safer using advice, safe syringe disposal units, contraception, safe sex information, support and referrals.

Inner West Outreach Service

Operating from a car, the Inner West Outreach Service (IWOS) is a day time program that provides access to clean injecting equipment, education and referrals to individuals in the inner west.

As a car based service, IWOS is able to provide a high level of access to individuals who may otherwise not access support or clean injecting equipment.

IWOS is available:

Monday – Friday: 10:00am – 5:00pm

  • Flemington
  • Kensington
  • Moonee Ponds
  • Niddrie
  • North Melbourne

North West Outreach Service

Also operating from a car, the North West Outreach Service (NWOS) is a night time program that provides access to clean injecting equipment, education and referrals to individuals in the north west 365 days a year.

NWOS is available:

Monday - Sunday: 7:30pm - 11:15pm

Fixed Exchange

Youth Projects also provides clean injecting equipment from a fixed site at 6 Hartington Street, Glenroy, 3046.

The fixed site is open from 9:00am - 5:00pm Monday to Friday.

If you need to access IWOS or NWOS and you are within the suburbs listed, you can call the mobile during the above operating hours or, make a free call from any public telephone. The team will let you know approximately how long the wait will be and will come to you.
